Key Climate Events in 2022
We know that each year is more critical than the last in the effort to avoid catastrophic climate change, and 2022 is no different. Several key events, publications and negotiations will be held/published and we have listed a selection of them here:
23-27 JANUARY
5TH UN CONFERENCE ON LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES (LDC5) DOHA, QATAR
A ten yearly conference to consider the needs of Least Developed Countries, home to 40% of the world’s population, and critically vulnerable to climate change amongst other threats.
FEBRUARY – OCTOBER
IPCC ASSESSMENT
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will begin its first comprehensive assessment report since the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2015.
The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report will bring together the work of three Working Groups and many of the world’s leading scientists. Working Group I on the Physical Science Basis published its report in August 2021.
2022 will see further reports from Working Group II on the impacts of climate change and Working Group III on progress on mitigation and efforts to limit emissions -

3 October IPCC Synthesis Report – Climate Change 2022
The Synthesis Report will bring together the work of the three Working Groups, together with Special Reports in this cycle, on Global Warming of 1.5oC, Climate Change and Land, and Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate.
25 APRIL – 8 MAY
UN BIODIVERSITY CONFERENCE (PART TWO) – KUNMING, CHINA
The first part of this Conference of the Convention on Biological Diversity took place in October 2021, and adopted the Kunming Declaration. This called on parties to negotiate and agree on a global biodiversity network, and the establishment of the Kunming Biodiversity Fund.
Part Two of the CBD Conference of Parties will aim to set out 21 targets and 10 ‘milestones’ to be reached by 2030, with net improvements by 2050, to include the conservation and protection of at least 30 percent of the planet’s land and oceans.
7 – 18 NOVEMBER
UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE (COP27) – SHARM EL-SHEIKH, EGYPT
The annual UN Climate Change Conference will take forward the work and commitments of COP26 and the Glasgow Climate Pact.
